Shamanic Voice - a laboratory given by Nikolai Galen

For the first half of the session, we’ll explore a variety of extended vocal techniques (techniques that are outside the Eurogenetic canon of vocal techniques as taught in most music schools; these might include techniques from the worlds of dada, jazz, folk music, the avant-garde and throat singing).

For the second half of the session, we’ll explore improvised choral work where we use the freedom of our vocal possibilities to explore musicality, the interplays of sound and silence, being part of the chorus while listening to oneself and the whole, and spontaneous composition.

Throughout the workshop, we’ll focus on Shamanic voice, the deepest kinds of utterances a modern human might produce, both sung and unsung, and we’ll end by bringing these ancient voices together into something that we might imagine as ancient chorality or rituality.

The focus will be on group work.

Requirements and wishes:

- punctuality

- no mobile phones or other distractions

- willingness to make sound and experiment

- we work barefoot in loose clothing.
